Translation is Dialogue (TID) is an art installation that generates a new project every time it is presented. This is due to the fact that every showing, the participation of new people, the medium they choose to express themselves with, the context of their creation, and how art inspires them changes. Contributing artists have come from the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, as well as Eastern, Central and Western Europe, and Scandinavia.

Each TID phase centers around the inspiration drawn from a verbal description of a dance performance, which the artists or participants then reinterpret and create for the installation.

To date TID has enabled over 300 art pieces to be realized and shared in a multitude of mediums ranging from visual, video, and textiles, to sculptural, sound and performance arts. This project focuses not only on the art that is produced but the theoretic and productive process of creating.

TID originated as an academic paper and presentation at the Art in Translation conference in Reykjavik, Iceland in 2010. It has expanded to interactive installations, exhibitions and performances, as well as educational workshops. Each step of the TID series strives to challenge existing accessibility, dialogue, and participation in multidisciplinary art and the multiple languages in which we ingest and conceive; translate and share them.

Georgie Goater - collaborator

Arlene is an interactive installation artist and educator interested in adding play elements to daily life through her art. Inspired by translation studies, animals and nature, she finds ways to connect and make meaning in our shared environments. Her artworks create spaces for dialogue to be opened and to be divulged, making way for interpretations, discoveries and surprises to flourish. Originally from Taiwan and USA, Arlene has been translating Helsinki, Finland since 2011.

Anastasia Artemeva - collaborator

Anastasia is a visual and relational artist, born in Russia, raised in Ireland, and currently based in Helsinki, Finland. Her work is developed through a process-oriented artistic practice, drawn from object making, performance art, art education, and research in human rights.

Alejandra is a semiotics professor at Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, a dancer and an art researcher on body and performing arts within contemporary culture, in Bogota, Colombia.

Nathan Williams - collaborator

Nathan explores translations transforming creative theory, process, and practice expressed in African Trans-Atlantic Diasporic arts; whether physical, in rhythmically embodied movement, visual, musical, lyrical, or spiritual; with views toward both documenting and developing artistic and architectural language in the design of object, space, and place.

Georgie Goater is a dance artist from Aotearoa, based in Helsinki. She was born and grewup bi-lingual in Nagoya (JP) and Ōtautahi (NZ). She performs, choreographs, facilitates workshops, writes, and collaborates as a freelancer, with Kaaos Company (FI) and with collectives Memory as Medium and Body Island (NZ/FI). Working with diverse embodied perceptions across disability and multi-cultural contexts has been a ground for making and constant learning.

Susanne Palzer - collaborator

Susanne is a cross-disciplinary artist, researcher and performer based in Sheffield, UK. Her current practice investigates the intersection of digital and analogue forms, in particular the fusion of digital technology and physical performance. She is the curator of OPENPLATFORM/RAP(s)-TwT., a micro event that explores the digital with physical means by asking performers to present digital work without using anything digital. Susanne is a co-director at Access Space, Sheffield.

Sonny Elinkautinen Black - collaborator

Sonny "Elinkautinen" Black is a rap musician based in Helsinki. He has experienced imprisonment firsthand. Sonny works directly with youth in the streets of east Helsinki and through correction institutions all over Finland, making music, singing, and encouraging young people to follow their dreams.
